Thus that numerous army of the swift Kalingas, having surrounded Bhishma in battle, charged at Bhimasena. Then, seeing Shrutayus at the head of the Kalinga forces, Bhimasena advanced toward him, O best of the Bharatas. Seeing him approach, Kalinga struck Bhimasena, whose spirit was immeasurable, in the chest with nine arrows. Struck by Kalinga's arrows like an elephant tormented by the goad, Bhimasena blazed up with wrath like fire fed by fuel. Then Ashoka, the charioteer, brought up a chariot adorned with gold and provided it to Bhima. Mounting it swiftly, the son of Kunti, slayer of foes, rushed at Kalinga, crying, ‘Stand! Stand!’ Then mighty Shrutayus, enraged, sent sharp arrows at Bhima, displaying the deftness of his hand. Bhima, of great renown, heavily struck by Kalinga with nine sharp arrows loosed from his finest bow, grew intensely enraged, like a snake struck with a stick. Enraged, the best of the strong drew his bow with force and, with seven iron arrows, slew Kalinga. With two kshura arrows he sent Kalinga's two mighty wheel-guards, Satyadeva and Satya, to Yama's abode. Then Bhima, of measureless spirit, sent Ketumant to Yama's abode in battle with three sharp narachas. Then the enraged Kalinga warriors, with ranks numbering in the thousands, surrounded wrathful Bhimasena. The Kalingas then showered Bhima with shaktis, maces, swords, tomaras, rishtis, and axes, O king. Having warded off that dreadful rain of arrows that had risen against him, mighty Bhima swiftly took up his mace, leapt forward, and sent seven hundred heroes to Yama's abode. Then the crusher of enemies sent yet another two thousand Kalingas to the realm of death — and this seemed like a wonder.
