देवनागरी
तेषां प्रद्रवतां भीमः पुनर् आवर्तताम् अपि ॥
वीक्षतां तिष्ठतां चासीच् छब्दः परमदारुणः ॥
शूराणां हर्षजननो भीरूणां भयवर्धनः ॥
द्यावापृथिव्योर् विवरं पूरयाम् आस सर्वतः ॥

Among those fleeing, again turning back, watching and [yet] holding their ground, there arose a most dreadful roar — kindling delight in heroes, deepening dread in cowards; it filled the whole space between heaven and earth.

One and the same roar of battle "kindles delight in heroes and deepens dread in cowards" — for the sound itself does not change, but resounds within each soul according to its own nature: what is without does not create what is within, it only lays it bare. Thus ordeal reveals who is brave and who is timid: one event divides men by what is hidden in them. Telling is the description of the wavering — fleeing, turning back, looking about: fear and valor contend within each man, and battle exposes this contest. The verse teaches that circumstance does not make a man brave or cowardly but only reveals his nature; that one and the same call gives rise to opposite things in different hearts; and that the hour of trial is the hour of truth about the soul.
