देवनागरी
देवताः पितरश् चैव पूर्वे ये चास्य बान्धवाः ॥
ददृशुर् निहतं तत्र भारद्वाजं महारथम् ॥
पाण्डवास् तु जयं लब्ध्वा सिंहनादान् प्रचक्रिरे ॥
तेन नादेन महता समकम्पत मेदिनी ॥

The gods, the ancestors, and the long-departed kinsmen of his beheld there the great chariot-warrior, the son of Bharadvaja [Drona], struck down. And the Pandavas, having won the victory, let out lion-roars; from that great roar the earth trembled.

The gods and ancestors 'gaze upon' Drona's fall — the passing of a great one takes place before unseen witnesses: nothing of consequence occurs without the eyes of the higher powers. Thus we are reminded that the battles of men are visible to heaven, and every deed is recorded in an unseen book. The lion-roar of the Pandavas and the trembling of the earth manifest the triumph of truth; but this triumph, as we know from the lament of 'alas and shame,' is shadowed by the questionable nature of the means. The verse teaches that great events unfold before the face of gods and ancestors, and man is not alone on earth; that the victory of dharma is real and shakes the very earth; and that even a righteous triumph is not free of shadow when it is won by a path not entirely pure — as the narrative that follows will tell.
