अथास्य बहुशो बाणा निश्चरन्तः सहस्रशः ॥
व्याप्य सर्वा दिशः पेतुर् गजाश्वरथपत्तिषु ॥

prākampanta raṇe yodhā gāvaḥ śītārditā iva ||
droṇasya rathaghoṣeṇa maurvīniṣpeṣaṇena ca ||
dhanuḥśabdena cākāśe śabdaḥ samabhavan mahān ||
athāsya bahuśo bāṇā niścarantaḥ sahasraśaḥ ||
vyāpya sarvā diśaḥ petur gajāśvarathapattiṣu ||
From his triumphant shout and the swiftness of his arrows, O lord, the warriors in battle trembled like cows afflicted by cold. From the rumble of Drona's chariot, the twanging of the bowstring and the resounding of the bow, a great uproar arose in the sky. And his arrows, streaming forth in abundance, by the thousands, covering all the directions, fell upon elephants, horses, chariots and infantry.

The warriors tremble "like cows in the cold" — an image of the helplessness of living beings before irresistible force: fearsome is the teacher who has become an instrument of Time. The very air is filled not with the word of wisdom for which Drona was famed, but with the rumble of the chariot and the twang of the bowstring: knowledge has given way to the thunder of weapons. Arrows "covering all the directions" show how strength unrestrained turns the world into a place of death. The verse teaches that might not governed by dharma reduces the living to a trembling herd; that where the teacher's word should sound, only weapons roar; and that greatness turned to slaughter fills the world not with light but with terror.
