अवाकिरञ् शरैस् तीक्ष्णैः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥
स विघातं पृषत्कानाम् अङ्कुशेन समाचरन् ॥
गजेन पाण्डुपाञ्चालान् व्यधमत् पर्वतेश्वरः ॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā hataṃ matvā vṛkodaram ||
bhagadattaṃ sapāñcālaḥ sarvataḥ samavārayat ||
taṃ rathai rathināṃ śreṣṭhāḥ parivārya samantataḥ ||
avākirañ śarais tīkṣṇaiḥ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ||
sa vighātaṃ pṛṣatkānām aṅkuśena samācaran ||
gajena pāṇḍupāñcālān vyadhamat parvateśvaraḥ ||
Then King Yudhishthira, thinking Vrikodara struck down, surrounded Bhagadatta from all sides together with the Panchalas. The best of the charioteers, encircling him on chariots, showered him from all sides with sharp arrows -- by hundreds and by thousands. But he, deftly deflecting the arrows with his goad, scattered the Pandavas and the Panchalas with his elephant -- the lord of the mountains.

Showered with thousands of arrows, Bhagadatta fends them off with his goad -- the tool not of a warrior but of a mahout: such is his mastery that even a plain goad becomes a shield in his hand. Alone upon his elephant, he scatters whole armies that have surrounded him. It is telling that Yudhishthira encircles him only because he believes the rumor of Bhima's death -- a hasty act based on unverified news. The verse teaches that a true master turns even the smallest thing at hand into both weapon and shield; that one valiant man, standing unshaken, can withstand a multitude closing around him; and that decisions made in confusion, on the strength of rumor, are reckless -- Yudhishthira throws his army into battle trusting something not yet confirmed.
