Urged on by the skill and effort of his driver, and torn by the enemies' arrows, that elephant flung those enemies about, left and right. Just as a herdsman drives herds of cattle in the forest with his staff, so did Bhagadatta hem in that host again and again. The clamor of the fleeing Pandavas rose up furiously, like the cry of crows overtaken by a hawk.

Bhagadatta drives back a whole host "like a herdsman with his staff drives a herd," and the fleeing warriors cry out "like crows overtaken by a hawk." Proud champions, in their fear, are likened now to cattle, now to a flock of crows — the humiliation of panic turns men into a hunted herd. It is telling that the tradition does not spare the Pandavas' pride here: fear levels everyone, turning the valiant into a bewildered mob. The verse teaches that even the bravest, once seized by fear, lose their dignity and become like a hunted herd; that panic reduces a man to a wordless creature fleeing for its life; and that a single formidable opponent, in whom strength and skill are joined, can turn a whole army of heroes into a screeching flock — a bitter reminder of how fragile the courage of the many is before one who has mastered both fear and the field.
