तेषां प्रद्रवतां भीमः पाञ्चालानाम् इतस् ततः ॥
गजवाजिकृतः शब्दः सुमहान् समजायत ॥
भगदत्तेन समरे काल्यमानेषु पाण्डुषु ॥
प्राग्ज्योतिषम् अभिक्रुद्धः पुनर् भीमः समभ्ययात् ॥
तस्याभिद्रवतो वाहान् हस्तमुक्तेन वारिणा ॥
सिक्त्वा व्यत्रासयन् नागस् ते पार्थम् अहरंस् ततः ॥

gajavājikṛtaḥ śabdaḥ sumahān samajāyata ||
bhagadattena samare kālyamāneṣu pāṇḍuṣu ||

tasyābhidravato vāhān hastamuktena vāriṇā ||
siktvā vyatrāsayan nāgas te pārtham aharaṃs tataḥ ||
A very great noise, made by elephants and horses, arose hither and thither among those fleeing Panchalas. When the Pandavas were being driven back by Bhagadatta in battle, Bhima, enraged, charged at Bhagadatta once more. As he charged, the elephant drenched his horses with water released from its trunk and scared them off; and those horses swept Partha [Bhima] away.

The elephant Supratika turns even the water from its trunk into a weapon: drenching Bhima's horses with it, it frightens them, and they carry the hero away -- not force but the panic of dumb beasts defeats him. This shows that even the mightiest warrior can be carried out of battle not by defeat but by the terror of his horses. It is telling that Bhima, unconquerable in direct combat, is removed by a ruse, not by being overpowered. The verse teaches that the outcome of a battle is sometimes decided not by blows but by something small -- a frightened horse, a splash of water; that a wise warrior-elephant strikes not only with might but with wit, turning everything at hand into a means; and that even the strongest depends on those who carry him -- the horses' fright swept Bhima to where no force could have driven him.
