इत्य् आसीत् तुमुलः शब्दो दुर्धर्षस्य रथं प्रति ॥
tataḥ senāpatiḥ śīghram ayaṃ kāla iti bruvan ||
nityābhitvaritān eva tvarayām āsa pāṇḍavān ||
kurvantaḥ śāsanaṃ tasya pāṇḍaveyā yaśasvinaḥ ||
saro haṃsā ivāpetur ghnanto droṇarathaṃ prati ||
gṛhṇītādravatānyonyaṃ vibhītā vinikṛntata ||
ity āsīt tumulaḥ śabdo durdharṣasya rathaṃ prati ||
Then the commander, crying: 'Now is the hour!', urged on the Pandavas, who were already swift. Carrying out his order, the glorious Pandavas rushed, like swans to a lake, striking, toward Drona's chariot. 'Seize him! Charge, supporting one another! You who are afraid — cut him down!' — such was the deafening clamor that stood at the chariot of the unassailable [Drona].

The commander catches the 'hour' — the instant when the assault will decide the matter — and hurls the army forward. Thus the gift of a leader shows itself: a sense for the right moment, for in battle the outcome is decided not by strength alone but also by the timing of the blow. The cry 'charge, supporting one another!' teaches what matters most — unity: even those afraid are called not to flee but to cut down the enemy together with everyone else. The verse teaches that in the affairs of war the choice of the moment decides all, and wise is the leader who senses when the 'hour' has come; that mutual support turns even the timid into fighters, for beside the steadfast the weak too grows firm; and that the united surge of many, aimed at the right instant toward a single goal, is more crushing than scattered valor, as a flock of swans reaches the lake with a single beat of wings.
