सुनसं सुभ्रु केशान्तं शिरो ऽहार्षीत् सकुण्डलम् ॥
लक्ष्मणं निहतं दृष्ट्वा हा हेत्य् उच्चुक्रुशुर् जनाः ॥
ततो दुर्योधनः क्रुद्धः प्रिये पुत्रे निपातिते ॥
हतैनम् इति चुक्रोश क्षत्रियान् क्षत्रियर्षभः ॥

udbabarha mahābāhur nirmuktoragasaṃnibham ||
sa tasya bhujanirmukto lakṣmaṇasya sudarśanam ||
sunasaṃ subhru keśāntaṃ śiro 'hārṣīt sakuṇḍalam ||
lakṣmaṇaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā hā hety uccukruśur janāḥ ||
tato duryodhanaḥ kruddhaḥ priye putre nipātite ||
hatainam iti cukrośa kṣatriyān kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ ||
Having spoken thus, the mighty-armed son of Subhadra, slayer of enemy heroes, then drew forth a bhalla arrow, resembling a serpent that has shed its skin. Loosed from his hand, it severed Lakshmana's handsome head — with a fine nose, fine brows, wondrous locks — together with its earrings. Then Duryodhana, enraged when his beloved son was struck down, cried out to the kshatriyas, bull among kshatriyas: "Kill him!"

The death of Lakshmana is a turning blow: for the first time the war strikes Duryodhana himself in the heart, taking his beloved son. And his cry "kill him!" is born no longer of calculation but of a father's grief turned into fury. It is telling that the tradition mourns the beauty of the fallen even here — the handsome head with its wondrous locks. The verse teaches that war, so long as it destroyed others, was mere sport for the instigator, but once it touched his own son, it turned into unbearable grief; that a father's sorrow, common to all, spares not even the persecutor; and that in this cry of the bereaved Duryodhana the beginning of retribution shows itself — for he who condemned the Pandavas to bereavement has now himself tasted the loss of a son, and the circle of suffering has closed over him too.
