मार्तिकावतकं भोजं ततः कुञ्जरकेतनम् ॥
क्षुरप्रेण समुन्मथ्य ननाद विसृजञ् शरान् ॥
तस्य दौःशासनिर् विद्ध्वा चतुर्भिश् चतुरो हयान् ॥
सूतम् एकेन विव्याध दशभिश् चार्जुनात्मजम् ॥

अनुवाद
Then, having crushed the Bhoja of Martikavata with the elephant banner with a razor arrow, he roared, loosing arrows. Then the son of Duhshasana, having wounded his [Abhimanyu's] four horses with four arrows and the charioteer with one, pierced the son of Arjuna with ten arrows.

Amid the multitude of foes appears the son of Duhshasana — the one destined in this chapter to become the instrument of the youth's death. The tradition introduces him plainly, among the rest, without yet marking his fateful role. It is telling that the destroyer does not appear at once as a destroyer, but as one among many. The verse teaches that the instrument of calamity often arrives unnoticed, in the ranks of the rest, before revealing its dark role; that fate prepares the outcome gradually, without disclosing it before its time; and that the tradition, introducing the son of Duhshasana without any special sign, will later expose all the more bitterly: here is one who, without surpassing the youth in battle, will finish him off unlawfully — for the coming crime will be accomplished not by valor, but by numbers and treachery.
