अथ कर्णः पुनर् द्रोणम् आहार्जुनिशरार्दितः ॥
स्थातव्यम् इति तिष्ठामि पीड्यमानो ऽभिमन्युना ॥
तेजस्विनः कुमारस्य शराः परमदारुणाः ॥
क्षिण्वन्ति हृदयं मे ऽद्य घोराः पावकतेजसः ॥

अनुवाद
Then Karna, tormented by the arrows of Arjuna's son, spoke again to Drona: "I stand only because one must stand, though pressed hard by Abhimanyu. The fiercest arrows of the radiant prince, dread and fiery, are sapping my heart even now."

Karna himself confesses: he holds his ground only because "one must stand" — duty forbids flight, though the boy's arrows "sap his heart." In this honest admission from the fiercest of enemies lies an unwitting measure of the child's greatness. It is significant that Karna hides neither his pain nor boasts of himself: he stands from honor, straining past his limit. The verse teaches that even the greatest warrior knows the edge of endurance, and sometimes stands only through duty, bearing the pain; that an honest admission of one's own suffering is worthier than any boast; and that Karna, openly telling how the boy presses him, thereby testifies to his incomparable valor more truly than any praise could — yet this very admission will also prompt Drona to name the lawless means of overcoming one who cannot be overcome by honor.
