पितृपैतामहं राज्यम् अपवृत्तं तदानघ ॥
अथ पार्थैर् जितां कृत्स्नां पृथिवीं प्रत्यपद्यथाः ॥
पाण्डुनावर्जितं राज्यं कौरवाणां यशस् तथा ॥
ततश् चाभ्यधिकं भूयः पाण्डवैर् धर्मचारिभिः ॥

atha pārthair jitāṃ kṛtsnāṃ pṛthivīṃ pratyapadyathāḥ ||

tataś cābhyadhikaṃ bhūyaḥ pāṇḍavair dharmacāribhiḥ ||

अनुवाद
"The kingdom of your father and grandfather was lost then, O sinless one; then the whole earth, conquered by the Parthas, you regained through them. The kingdom won by Pandu, and the glory of the Kauravas — was then increased still further, beyond that, by the Pandavas, walkers in dharma."

Sanjaya recalls a bitter truth: all the greatness of the lineage was multiplied by the Pandavas themselves — "pāṇḍavaiḥ dharmacāribhiḥ," faithful to dharma. They, who won the land, were themselves the source of the glory that Dhritarashtra then took from them. It is telling that the benefactors became the victims. The verse teaches ingratitude as the root of a black downfall: to take from those who increased your wealth by righteous labor is a double sin; and a kingdom won by another's dharma and seized by unrighteousness brings no good, but ruin upon the one who seized it.
