By many kings and heroes, stationed here and there, with streams of chariots, horses, elephants, and foot, the formation itself was arrayed by Drona. In its rear half -- the lotus, the inner formation, hard to breach; the needle, in the middle of the lotus, was again made a hidden formation.

Formation is nested within formation: "padmaḥ... garbhavyūhaḥ... sūcī padmasya madhyasthaḥ gūḍhaḥ," a lotus within the cart, and in the heart of the lotus a hidden needle. A labyrinth of defense, to bury one man as deep as possible. It is telling how far fear can elaborate itself: the deeper the shelter, the louder the admission of vulnerability. The verse teaches that intricate defenses betray the weakness of a cause: where there is righteousness, labyrinths are unneeded; and the many-layered shelter of the guilty is not strength but evidence that he cannot meet retribution directly.
