देवनागरी
रथिनो रथिभिः सार्धम् अश्वारोहाश् च सादिभिः ॥
मातङ्गा वरमातङ्गैः पदाताश् च पदातिभिः ॥
क्षीबा इवान्ये चोन्मत्ता रङ्गेष्व् इव च चारणाः ॥
उच्चुक्रुशुस् तथान्योन्यं जघ्नुर् अन्योन्यम् आहवे ॥

अनुवाद
Charioteers with charioteers, and horsemen with horsemen, elephants with the finest elephants, and foot-soldiers with foot-soldiers; others, like drunken and maddened men, as if actors on a stage, thus shouted at one another [and] struck one another in battle.

The image 'kṣībāḥ iva... unmattāḥ... raṅgeṣu cāraṇāḥ,' 'like drunken men, maddened, actors on a stage,' bares the madness of the slaughter: people no longer master themselves, they play a role in a bloody spectacle. It is significant that war is likened to acting -- a terrible game in which death is real. The verse teaches that in the heat of fratricide people lose their reason like the intoxicated: war turns the rational into madmen, actors in someone else's tragedy; and whoever discerns this derangement in battle will not call it a reasoned deed, but only a common madness into which falsehood has cast them.
