धृष्टद्युम्नश् च संप्रेक्ष्य द्रोणम् अभ्याशम् आगतम् ॥
असिचर्माददे वीरो धनुर् उत्सृज्य भारत ॥
चिकीर्षुर् दुष्करं कर्म पार्षतः परवीरहा ॥
ईषया समतिक्रम्य द्रोणस्य रथम् आविशत् ॥
अतिष्ठद् युगमध्ये स युगसंनहनेषु च ॥
जघानार्धेषु चाश्वानां तत् सैन्यान्य् अभ्यपूजयन् ॥
dhṛṣṭadyumnaś ca saṃprekṣya droṇam abhyāśam āgatam ||
asicarmādade vīro dhanur utsṛjya bhārata ||
cikīrṣur duṣkaraṃ karma pārṣataḥ paravīrahā ||
īṣayā samatikramya droṇasya ratham āviśat ||
atiṣṭhad yugamadhye sa yugasaṃnahaneṣu ca ||
jaghānārdheṣu cāśvānāṃ tat sainyāny abhyapūjayan ||
And Dhrishtadyumna, seeing Drona come close to him, took up sword and shield, the hero, casting aside his bow, O Bharata. Wishing to accomplish a difficult deed, Parshata, slayer of enemy heroes, having crossed along the pole, entered Drona's chariot. He stood in the middle of the yoke and on the yoke's fastenings, and struck at the sides of the horses -- at that the armies cheered.

An unmatched daring: 'droṇasya ratham āviśat,' Dhrishtadyumna enters the very chariot of the formidable Drona with a sword. 'Cikīrṣuḥ duṣkaram karma,' 'wishing to accomplish a difficult deed,' he risks his life for a feat. It is significant that the armies 'abhyapūjayan,' applaud the daring. The verse teaches that great valor stirs admiration even in the enemy: audacity that transgresses the fear of death wrings applause from all; and one who enters the lair of the strongest for the sake of a goal shows a courage before which hostility itself falls silent.
