तम् अभिद्रुतम् आलोक्य द्रोणेनामित्रघातिना ॥
हा हेति सहसा शब्दः पाण्डूनां समजायत ॥
हृतो राजा हृतो राजा भारद्वाजेन मारिष ॥
इत्य् आसीत् सुमहाञ् शब्दः पाण्डुसैन्यस्य सर्वतः ॥
ततस् त्वरितम् आरुह्य सहदेवरथं नृपः ॥
अपायाज् जवनैर् अश्वैः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
tam abhidrutam ālokya droṇenāmitraghātinā ||
hā heti sahasā śabdaḥ pāṇḍūnāṃ samajāyata ||
hṛto rājā hṛto rājā bhāradvājena māriṣa ||
ity āsīt sumahāñ śabdaḥ pāṇḍusainyasya sarvataḥ ||
tatas tvaritam āruhya sahadevarathaṃ nṛpaḥ ||
apāyāj javanair aśvaiḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
Seeing him attacked by Drona, slayer of foes, a cry of 'Alas, alas!' suddenly arose among the Pandavas. 'The king is captured, the king is captured by the son of Bharadvaja!' — such was the exceedingly great cry of the army of the Pandavas on every side. Then, swiftly mounting the chariot of Sahadeva, the king, Yudhishthira son of Kunti, withdrew on swift horses.

The cry 'hṛto rājā,' 'the king is captured!,' already sounds as an accomplished fact — but in that same instant Yudhishthira mounts his brother's chariot and escapes. It is telling that the righteous king's retreat is no disgrace but wisdom: to preserve oneself for the just cause is worth more than the false honor of standing fast where the enemy's very design is to take one captive. The verse teaches that prudent retreat is a virtue when stubbornness would only serve the enemy's hand; sometimes preserving what matters most outweighs refusing to yield a single step.
