यश् च संजय दुर्बुद्धिर् अब्रवीत् समितौ मुहुः ॥
कर्णो दुःशासनो ऽहं च जेष्यामो युधि पाण्डवान् ॥
स नूनं विरथं दृष्ट्वा कर्णं भीमेन निर्जितम् ॥
प्रत्याख्यानाच् च कृष्णस्य भृशं तप्यति संजय ॥
दृष्ट्वा भ्रातॄन् हतान् युद्धे भीमसेनेन दंशितान् ॥
आत्मापराधात् सुमहन् नूनं तप्यति पुत्रकः ॥
yaś ca saṃjaya durbuddhir abravīt samitau muhuḥ ||
karṇo duḥśāsano 'haṃ ca jeṣyāmo yudhi pāṇḍavān ||
sa nūnaṃ virathaṃ dṛṣṭvā karṇaṃ bhīmena nirjitam ||
pratyākhyānāc ca kṛṣṇasya bhṛśaṃ tapyati saṃjaya ||
dṛṣṭvā bhrātṝn hatān yuddhe bhīmasenena daṃśitān ||
ātmāparādhāt sumahan nūnaṃ tapyati putrakaḥ ||
"And he, Sanjaya, the evil-minded one, who kept saying in the assembly again and again: 'Karna, Duhshasana and I will conquer the Pandavas in battle' -- he, surely, seeing Karna chariotless, defeated by Bhima, and because of the rejection of Krishna, grieves sorely, Sanjaya. Seeing his brothers slain in battle by Bhimasena, though clad in armor, surely because of his own fault the poor boy grieves exceedingly."

The boast "the three of us shall overcome the Pandavas" turns into the sight of Karna defeated and the brothers fallen -- and Dhritarashtra sees the root of it: "because of his own fault." It is notable that the rejection of the peace offered by Krishna is also recalled: the refusal of reconciliation is itself the source of the present grief. The verse teaches that grief born of one's own wrongdoing is bitterer than any other; whoever spurned the hand of peace extended to him has himself condemned himself to this punishment.
