तत्राद्भुतम् अपश्याम भीमसेनस्य विक्रमम् ॥
संवार्याधिरथिं बाणैर् यज् जघान तवात्मजान् ॥
स वार्यमाणो भीमेन शितैर् बाणैः समन्ततः ॥
सूतपुत्रो महाराज भीमसेनम् अवैक्षत ॥
तं भीमसेनः संरम्भात् क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ॥
विस्फार्य सुमहच् चापं मुहुः कर्णम् अवैक्षत ॥
tatrādbhutam apaśyāma bhīmasenasya vikramam ||
saṃvāryādhirathiṃ bāṇair yaj jaghāna tavātmajān ||
sa vāryamāṇo bhīmena śitair bāṇaiḥ samantataḥ ||
sūtaputro mahārāja bhīmasenam avaikṣata ||
taṃ bhīmasenaḥ saṃrambhāt krodhasaṃraktalocanaḥ ||
visphārya sumahac cāpaṃ muhuḥ karṇam avaikṣata ||
"There we beheld a wonder — the valor of Bhimasena: that, restraining the son of Adhiratha with arrows, he yet slew your sons. He, held in check by Bhima's sharp arrows from every side, the son of the suta, O great king, gazed at Bhimasena. And at him Bhimasena, in fury, his eyes crimson with wrath, drawing his mighty bow, gazed again and again at Karna."

The wonder of Bhima is to hold Karna in check and strike down the brothers at once — a strength that masters two tasks in a single moment. It is telling that the chapter closes not with a blow but with a gaze — the two lock eyes, and the clash pauses on the edge of a new eruption. The verse teaches that in battle it is not raw force alone that decides, but wholeness of spirit holding many things at once; and a gaze that meets a gaze can be more fearsome than a raised weapon.
