तम् अन्ये शूरसेनानां शूराः संख्ये न्यवारयन् ॥
नियच्छन्तः शरव्रातैर् मत्तं द्विपम् इवाङ्कुशैः ॥
तान् न्यवारयद् आयस्तान् मुहूर्तम् इव सात्यकिः ॥
ततः कलिङ्गैर् युयुधे सो ऽचिन्त्यबलविक्रमः ॥
तां च सेनाम् अतिक्रम्य कलिङ्गानां दुरत्ययाम् ॥
अथ पार्थं महाबाहुर् धनंजयम् उपासदत् ॥
tam anye śūrasenānāṃ śūrāḥ saṃkhye nyavārayan ||
niyacchantaḥ śaravrātair mattaṃ dvipam ivāṅkuśaiḥ ||
tān nyavārayad āyastān muhūrtam iva sātyakiḥ ||
tataḥ kaliṅgair yuyudhe so 'cintyabalavikramaḥ ||
tāṃ ca senām atikramya kaliṅgānāṃ duratyayām ||
atha pārthaṃ mahābāhur dhanaṃjayam upāsadat ||
Other brave men of the Shurasenas held him back in battle, restraining him with multitudes of arrows, as one restrains a rutting elephant with goads. Them, though straining, Satyaki repelled in a moment; then he, of inconceivable strength and valor, fought with the Kalingas. And having overcome that hard-to-pass army of the Kalingas, the mighty-armed one drew near then to Partha Dhananjaya.

Nation after nation — Shurasenas, Kalingas — rise in Satyaki's path, and each he overcomes: devotion knows no barrier. It is significant that his goal remains ever the same — to draw near to Arjuna: through every obstruction he goes toward his friend. The verse teaches that unwavering fidelity breaks through any hindrance; and he whose heart is set upon another overcomes host after host not for the sake of victories, but for the sake of meeting.
