अद्य मद्बाणनिर्दग्धं पतितं धरणीतले ॥
द्रक्ष्यतस् त्वां रणे वीरौ सहितौ केशवार्जुनौ ॥
अद्य धर्मसुतो राजा श्रुत्वा त्वां निहतं मया ॥
सव्रीडो भविता सद्यो येनासीह प्रवेशितः ॥
अद्य मे विक्रमं पार्थो विज्ञास्यति धनंजयः ॥
त्वयि भूमौ विनिहते शयाने रुधिरोक्षिते ॥
adya madbāṇanirdagdhaṃ patitaṃ dharaṇītale ||
drakṣyatas tvāṃ raṇe vīrau sahitau keśavārjunau ||
adya dharmasuto rājā śrutvā tvāṃ nihataṃ mayā ||
savrīḍo bhavitā sadyo yenāsīha praveśitaḥ ||
adya me vikramaṃ pārtho vijñāsyati dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
tvayi bhūmau vinihate śayāne rudhirokṣite ||
Today, burned by my arrows, fallen upon the ground, the two heroes shall see you in battle -- Keśava and Arjuna together. Today the king, the son of Dharma, hearing that you have been slain by me, shall at once be ashamed -- he by whom you were sent here. Today Pārtha Dhanañjaya shall know my valor, when you, slain, lie upon the earth, drenched in blood.

Bhūriśravas dreams not of the deed but of its fruits -- of Yudhiṣṭhira's shame, of Arjuna's recognition: vanity lives on another's gaze. It is telling that he imagines shaming the king through the death of the one the king sent: triumph over the enemy alone is not enough for him, he wants also to humiliate the one who sent him. The verse teaches that valor seeking above all glory in the eyes of others is hollow within; and one who savors an imagined victory in advance most often never reaches it.
