एवम् उक्तः स्मयन् कृष्णः शनकैर् वाहयन् हयान् ॥
दर्शयाम् आस पार्थाय क्रूरम् आयोधनं महत् ॥
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच
प्रार्थयन्तो जयं युद्धे प्रथितं च महद् यशः ॥
पृथिव्यां शेरते शूराः पार्थिवास् त्वच्छरैर् हताः ॥
विकीर्णशस्त्राभरणा विपन्नाश्वरथद्विपाः ॥
संछिन्नभिन्नवर्माणो वैक्लव्यं परमं गताः ॥
ससत्त्वा गतसत्त्वाश् च प्रभया परया युताः ॥
सजीवा इव लक्ष्यन्ते गतसत्त्वा नराधिपाः ॥
evam uktaḥ smayan kṛṣṇaḥ śanakair vāhayan hayān ||
darśayām āsa pārthāya krūram āyodhanaṃ mahat ||
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca
prārthayanto jayaṃ yuddhe prathitaṃ ca mahad yaśaḥ ||
pṛthivyāṃ śerate śūrāḥ pārthivās tvaccharair hatāḥ ||
vikīrṇaśastrābharaṇā vipannāśvarathadvipāḥ ||
saṃchinnabhinnavarmāṇo vaiklavyaṃ paramaṃ gatāḥ ||
sasattvā gatasattvāś ca prabhayā parayā yutāḥ ||
sajīvā iva lakṣyante gatasattvā narādhipāḥ ||
Thus hearing this, smiling, Krishna, slowly driving his horses, showed to Partha the vast, terrible field of battle: "Longing for victory in battle and for famed, great glory, the heroes — kings slain by your arrows — lie upon the earth, their weapons and ornaments scattered, their horses, chariots, and elephants perished, their armor cut and pierced, fallen into utter helplessness. Living and lifeless, endowed with supreme radiance, the lifeless lords of men appear as though still living."

Krishna shows his friend the field where those who longed for glory now lie in the dust: the vanity of earthly ambition, turned by war into nothing. It is telling that the dead kings "seem alive" — their beauty has not faded, but life has departed. The verse teaches that the glory and splendor for which men go to their deaths remain upon their bodies while life itself departs; and the sight of the fallen, still radiant yet breathless, is a bitter lesson on the vanity of all that pride pursues.
