तं तु दृष्ट्वा हतं शूरम् अश्वत्थामा महारथः ॥
अभ्यधावत वेगेन शैनेयं प्रति संयुगे ॥
अभ्यवर्षच् छरौघेण मेरुं वृष्ट्या यथाम्बुदः ॥
तम् आपतन्तं संरब्धं शैनेयस्य रथं प्रति ॥
घटोत्कचो ऽब्रवीद् राजन् नादं मुक्त्वा महारथः ॥
तिष्ठ तिष्ठ न मे जीवन् द्रोणपुत्र गमिष्यसि ॥
एष त्वाद्य हनिष्यामि महिषं स्कन्दराड् इव ॥
युद्धश्रद्धाम् अहं ते ऽद्य विनेष्यामि रणाजिरे ॥
इत्य् उक्त्वा रोषताम्राक्षो राक्षसः परवीरहा ॥
द्रौणिम् अभ्यद्रवत् क्रुद्धो गजेन्द्रम् इव केसरी ॥

yuddhaśraddhām ahaṃ te 'dya vineṣyāmi raṇājire ||
ity uktvā roṣatāmrākṣo rākṣasaḥ paravīrahā ||
drauṇim abhyadravat kruddho gajendram iva kesarī ||
Having seen that hero slain, Aśvatthāman, the great warrior, charged headlong toward Śaineya in the clash. He showered him with a stream of arrows, as a cloud showers Meru with rain. As he furiously charged toward Śaineya's chariot, Ghaṭotkaca, O king, raising a war cry, the great warrior, called out: "Stay, stay! From me you shall not depart alive, son of Droṇa. Now I shall strike you down, as the lord Skanda slew the buffalo; your ardor for battle I shall now stamp out on the field of battle."

Ghaṭotkaca hurls a bold challenge at Aśvatthāman — but fate will turn his words against the speaker: it is not he who will slay the son of Droṇa, but he himself who will fall in this very chapter. It is telling how a boastful vow foreshadows its own defeat. The verse warns against words born of ardor: gloating over another's death often announces one's own; and whoever rejoices over an enemy in advance tempts the very fate that has no patience for self-assurance and delights in turning proud promises back upon their maker.
