शिखण्डी तु महाराज गौतमस्य महद् धनुः ॥
अर्धचन्द्रेण चिच्छेद सज्यं सविशिखं तदा ॥
तस्य क्रुद्धः कृपो राजञ् शक्तिं चिक्षेप दारुणाम् ॥
स्वर्णदण्डाम् अकुण्ठाग्रां कर्मारपरिमार्जिताम् ॥
ताम् आपतन्तीं चिच्छेद शिखण्डी बहुभिः शरैः ॥
सापतन् मेदिनीं दीप्ता भासयन्ती महाप्रभा ॥
अथान्यद् धनुर् आदाय गौतमो रथिनां वरः ॥
प्राच्छादयच् छितैर् बाणैर् महाराज शिखण्डिनम् ॥
śikhaṇḍī tu mahārāja gautamasya mahad dhanuḥ ||
ardhacandreṇa ciccheda sajyaṃ saviśikhaṃ tadā ||
tasya kruddhaḥ kṛpo rājañ śaktiṃ cikṣepa dāruṇām ||
svarṇadaṇḍām akuṇṭhāgrāṃ karmāraparimārjitām ||
tām āpatantīṃ ciccheda śikhaṇḍī bahubhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
sāpatan medinīṃ dīptā bhāsayantī mahāprabhā ||
athānyad dhanur ādāya gautamo rathināṃ varaḥ ||
prācchādayac chitair bāṇair mahārāja śikhaṇḍinam ||
And the night, O best of the Bharatas, was for the warriors skilled in battle like the night of doom, fearsome in aspect, striking terror. But Shikhandin, O great king, cut the great bow of Gautama with a crescent-headed arrow - strung, with its arrow, then. The night is called "like the night of doom" (kalaratri): darkness itself becomes a deity of destruction. It is significant that on this night, when all boundaries are erased, warriors meet whose fates are already foretold. The verse teaches that there are times marked with the seal of doom, when the very air breathes of fate; and the wise recognize such hours - not to escape what is destined, but to meet it with a clear spirit, knowing that even the darkness of doom is subject to a higher order.
