Санджая
एतेन सहितो युध्य पाञ्चालैश् च महारथैः ॥
आश्वासनार्थं सर्वेषां सैन्यानां पाण्डुनन्दन ॥
ततस् तौ पुरुषव्याघ्राव् उभौ माधवपाण्डवौ ॥
द्रोणकर्णौ समासाद्य धिष्ठितौ रणमूर्धनि ॥
ततस् तत् पुनर् आवृत्तं युधिष्ठिरबलं महत् ॥
ततो द्रोणश् च कर्णश् च परान् ममृदतुर् युधि ॥
स संप्रहारस् तुमुलो निशि प्रत्यभवन् महान् ॥
यथा सागरयो राजंश् चन्द्रोदयविवृद्धयोः ॥
etena sahito yudhya pāñcālaiś ca mahārathaiḥ ||
āśvāsanārthaṃ sarveṣāṃ sainyānāṃ pāṇḍunandana ||
tatas tau puruṣavyāghrāv ubhau mādhavapāṇḍavau ||
droṇakarṇau samāsādya dhiṣṭhitau raṇamūrdhani ||
tatas tat punar āvṛttaṃ yudhiṣṭhirabalaṃ mahat ||
tato droṇaś ca karṇaś ca parān mamṛdatur yudhi ||
sa saṃprahāras tumulo niśi pratyabhavan mahān ||
yathā sāgarayo rājaṃś candrodayavivṛddhayoḥ ||
"Enraged, he comes swiftly against the mighty Drona and Karna; join with him and fight, together with the Panchalas, the great warriors, to reassure all the armies, O son of Pandu." Then those two tigers among men, both Madhava [Krishna] and the Pandava [Arjuna], approaching Drona and Karna, took their stand at the head of the battle. Then Yudhishthira's great army turned back again; then Drona and Karna crushed the enemies in battle. That tumultuous clash grew great in the night.

Krishna cares not only for the outcome of the battle but for the spirit of the troops: fight, he says, "to reassure all the armies." It is telling that the mere presence of heroes turns back a wavering host. The verse teaches that a leader does not fight for himself alone: his steadfastness is a support to many; and when the best take their place at the front, those fleeing turn and go back into the fight. The spirit of an army holds by the example of those in the vanguard, and so the hero's place is where reassurance is most needed.
