यत्र यत्र स्म दृश्यन्ते प्रदीपाः कुरुसत्तम ॥
तत्र तत्र स्म ते शूरा निपतन्ति पतंगवत् ॥
तथा संयुध्यमानानां विगाढाभून् महानिशा ॥
पाण्डवानां च राजेन्द्र कौरवाणां च सर्वशः ॥

अनुवाद
[Such was the roar] of the enraged, the fighting, the victorious and the vanquished alike. Wherever the torches were seen, O best of the Kurus, there those very heroes fell, like moths. Thus for those who fought, the great night deepened -- of the Pandavas and, O lord of kings, of the Kauravas, everywhere.

The chapter closes with the image of warriors flying to the light of torches and perishing, "like moths": the pull toward light turns into death. It is telling that the very brightness that restored sight now lures the fighters to their ruin. The verse teaches that an unreasoning attraction to a visible good destroys, as flame destroys the moth; and in this night of Kurukshetra, where light draws men to death, is shown the bitter image of a blindness that drives the living toward their own destruction.
