तम् अञ्जनचयप्रख्यं कर्णो दृष्ट्वा महीधरम् ॥
प्रपातैर् आयुधान्य् उग्राण्य् उद्वहन्तं न चुक्षुभे ॥
स्मयन्न् इव ततः कर्णो दिव्यम् अस्त्रम् उदीरयत् ॥
ततः सो ऽस्त्रेण शैलेन्द्रो विक्षिप्तो वै व्यनश्यत ॥
ततः स तोयदो भूत्वा नीलः सेन्द्रायुधो दिवि ॥
अश्मवृष्टिभिर् अत्युग्रः सूतपुत्रम् अवाकिरत् ॥
अथ संधाय वायव्यम् अस्त्रम् अस्त्रविदां वरः ॥
व्यधमत् कालमेघं तं कर्णो वैकर्तनो वृषा ॥

prapātair āyudhāny ugrāṇy udvahantaṃ na cukṣubhe ||
smayann iva tataḥ karṇo divyam astram udīrayat ||
tataḥ so 'streṇa śailendro vikṣipto vai vyanaśyata ||
tataḥ sa toyado bhūtvā nīlaḥ sendrāyudho divi ||
aśmavṛṣṭibhir atyugraḥ sūtaputram avākirat ||
atha saṃdhāya vāyavyam astram astravidāṃ varaḥ ||
vyadhamat kālameghaṃ taṃ karṇo vaikartano vṛṣā ||
Ghatotkacha then displayed his sorcery, vanishing again: he became a lofty mountain, with peaks dense with trees, immense, pouring forth spears, javelins, swords, and clubs like water. Seeing him, resembling a heap of antimony, that mountain hurling down fearsome weapons, Karna was not troubled. As though smiling, Karna then displayed a divine weapon; then by that weapon the lord of mountains, scattered, vanished. Then he, having become a cloud, dark, with a rainbow in the sky...

A mountain, a rain of weapons, a cloud with a rainbow — Ghatotkacha runs through forms, but Karna "is not troubled" and disperses each "as though smiling." It is telling how unbroken this calm remains before the succession of illusions. The verse teaches that against many-faced deception only one thing avails — unshaken steadiness: however many masks the enemy dons, a clear spirit sees through them to the emptiness beneath and disperses them; and a master's smile before sorcery is the sign that he sees straight through it.
