Ghatotkacha then displayed his sorcery, vanishing again: he became a lofty mountain, with peaks dense with trees, immense, pouring forth spears, javelins, swords, and clubs like water. Seeing him, resembling a heap of antimony, that mountain hurling down fearsome weapons, Karna was not troubled. A mountain, a rain of weapons, a cloud with a rainbow — Ghatotkacha runs through forms, but Karna "is not troubled" and disperses each "as though smiling." It is telling how unbroken this calm remains before the succession of illusions. The verse teaches that against many-faced deception only one thing avails — unshaken steadiness: however many masks the enemy dons, a clear spirit sees through them to the emptiness beneath and disperses them; and a master's smile before sorcery is the sign that he sees straight through it.
