तम् आजिशीर्षाद् एकान्तम् अपक्रान्तं निशाम्य तु ॥
समकम्पन्त सैन्यानि पाण्डवानां विशां पते ॥
भ्राजमानं श्रिया युक्तं ज्वलन्तम् इव तेजसा ॥
द्रोणं दृष्ट्वारयस् त्रेसुश् चेलुर् मम्लुश् च मारिष ॥
आह्वयन्तं परानीकं प्रभिन्नम् इव वारणम् ॥
नैनं शशंसिरे जेतुं दानवा वासवं यथा ॥
के चिद् आसन् निरुत्साहाः के चित् क्रुद्धा मनस्विनः ॥
विस्मिताश् चाभवन् के चित् के चिद् आसन्न् अमर्षिताः ॥

...stood in battle, Drona, like smokeless fire. Him, [withdrawn] aside from the forefront of battle, having noticed [him] having withdrawn, the armies of the Pandavas trembled, O lord of peoples. Shining, filled with splendor, as if blazing with power, seeing Drona, the foes quailed, wavered and drooped, O worthy one. Challenging the enemy host, like a maddened elephant, they did not hope to conquer him, as the Danavas [hoped to conquer] Vasava [Indra]. Some were disheartened, others were angry, [yet] steadfast in mind.

Drona alone, "like smokeless fire," makes whole armies shudder: the presence of the great is itself a power. Notable is how the foes tremble before the blow, merely at the sight of his splendor. The verse teaches that some valor is such that it terrifies by its very bearing; and greatness of spirit, manifest in a person, can shake multitudes before any battle at all -- for might is recognized even by a trembling enemy before the first shot is fired.
