इति तेषां प्रतिश्रुत्य मध्ये सर्वधनुष्मताम् ॥
आयाद् द्रोणं सहानीकः पाञ्चाल्यः परवीरहा ॥
पाञ्चालास् त्व् एकतो द्रोणम् अभ्यघ्नन् पाण्डवान्यतः ॥
दुर्योधनश् च कर्णश् च शकुनिश् चापि सौबलः ॥
सोदर्याश् च यथा मुख्यास् ते ऽरक्षन् द्रोणम् आहवे ॥
रक्ष्यमाणं तथा द्रोणं समरे तैर् महात्मभिः ॥
यतमानापि पाञ्चाला न शेकुः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ॥
तत्राक्रुध्यद् भीमसेनो धृष्टद्युम्नस्य मारिष ॥
स एनं वाग्भिर् उग्राभिस् ततक्ष पुरुषर्षभ ॥

"From the [fruit] of sacrifices and good works, from kshatriyahood, and from brahminhood let him fall away, from whom Drona should today escape, or whoever turns away from Drona." Having thus sworn to them amidst all the bowmen, the Panchalya [Dhrishtadyumna], slayer of enemy heroes, went against Drona with his army. Dhrishtadyumna binds all with an oath: cursed be whoever lets Drona escape or turns away from him. Notable is how the vow is laid "amidst all the bowmen" -- a common pledge against a single man. The verse teaches that a great goal unites many under a single oath; and a curse invoked upon the deserter is the very rein by which a leader binds an army to a decisive deed -- for a shared vow is stronger than solitary resolve.
