The list continues: rice — the moon, sesame — wind, beans — Varuṇa, barley — the sun. As far as one can judge, these correspondences are not arbitrary: sesame in ritual is linked to the ancestors and to water, barley to light and to sacrifice — but this cannot be verified from the book itself, for it offers no explanation. Worth saying something about the structure of such a list, for it occurs in every ritual book and takes on new forms in our own day too. This is a price list: put in so much — get out so much.
Such a structure is native to a person, and hence it endures. It is understandable, verifiable by ear, and requires neither trust nor relationship: performance suffices. The Vaishnava side objects to the price list not on the grounds that it lies, but that it is small. The Gītā speaks of people «carried away by a multitude of desires», that they go to the gods and get what they wanted — and calls their understanding hṛta-jñāna, «carried away» (7.20).
This word is precise: not «false», but carried away — that is, knowledge was there, but desire swept it off. And so the dispute here is not over whether the price list works, but over what a person spends the one life he has on.
