«Having worshipped me, having the form of the liṅga, yogīs meditate; the perfected, having attained perfection; sacrificers offer sacrifice. Me indeed the Vedas praise, with their limbs, with the upaniṣads, with the itihāsas».

It is said yajanti yajvānaḥ, «sacrificers offer sacrifice» — that is, every sacrifice, to whomever it is offered, is offered to me. This claim is a commonplace in sacred books, and the Vaishnava side voices it of its own Lord: «and those devoted to other deities, who sacrifice with faith — they too sacrifice to Me alone» (Gītā 9.23). But in this verse of the Gītā there is a word absent here, and it decides the matter: avidhi-pūrvakam, «not according to rule».
That is, the claim is voiced, but at once qualified: yes, everything comes to Me, yet it comes not as it should, and so the one who offers does not receive what he might have. The difference is not erased, but named. The difference between the two ways of claiming matters, and deserves stating. One way absorbs: everything done is done to me, and there is nothing more to say. The other absorbs and distinguishes: everything comes to me, but not everything comes rightly, and the outcome depends on this.
The second way, to my mind, is more honest, for it leaves a subject for conversation. Where no distinction is drawn, there is nothing to argue about — but also nothing to choose from.
