धनार्थी याम्य् अहं तत्र तन् मे दित्स भुजंगम ॥
ततो ऽहं विनिवर्तिष्ये गृहायोरगसत्तम ॥
तक्षक उवाच
यावद् धनं प्रार्थयसे तस्माद् राज्ञस् ततो ऽधिकम् ॥
अहं ते ऽद्य प्रदास्यामि निवर्तस्व द्विजोत्तम ॥
सूत उवाच
तक्षकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा काश्यपो द्विजसत्तमः ॥
प्रदध्यौ सुमहातेजा राजानं प्रति बुद्धिमान् ॥
दिव्यज्ञानः स तेजस्वी ज्ञात्वा तं नृपतिं तदा ॥
क्षीणायुषं पाण्डवेयम् अपावर्तत काश्यपः ॥
लब्ध्वा वित्तं मुनिवरस् तक्षकाद् यावद् ईप्सितम् ॥
निवृत्ते काश्यपे तस्मिन् समयेन महात्मनि ॥
जगाम तक्षकस् तूर्णं नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥
अथ शुश्राव गच्छन् स तक्षको जगतीपतिम् ॥
मन्त्रागदैर् विषहरै रक्ष्यमाणं प्रयत्नतः ॥
स चिन्तयाम् आस तदा मायायोगेन पार्थिवः ॥
मया वञ्चयितव्यो ऽसौ क उपायो भवेद् इति ॥
ततस् तापसरूपेण प्राहिणोत् स भुजंगमान् ॥
फलपत्रोदकं गृह्य राज्ञे नागो ऽथ तक्षकः ॥
तक्षक उवाच
गच्छध्वं यूयम् अव्यग्रा राजानं कार्यवत्तया ॥
फलपत्रोदकं नाम प्रतिग्राहयितुं नृपम् ॥
सूत उवाच
ते तक्षकसमादिष्टास् तथा चक्रुर् भुजंगमाः ॥
उपनिन्युस् तथा राज्ञे दर्भान् आपः फलानि च ॥
तच् च सर्वं स राजेन्द्रः प्रतिजग्राह वीर्यवान् ॥
कृत्वा च तेषां कार्याणि गम्यताम् इत्य् उवाच तान् ॥
गतेषु तेषु नागेषु तापसच्छद्मरूपिषु ॥
अमात्यान् सुहृदश् चैव प्रोवाच स नराधिपः ॥
भक्षयन्तु भवन्तो वै स्वादूनीमानि सर्वशः ॥
तापसैर् उपनीतानि फलानि सहिता मया ॥
ततो राजा ससचिवः फलान्य् आदातुम् ऐच्छत ॥
यद् गृहीतं फलं राज्ञा तत्र कृमिर् अभूद् अणुः ॥
ह्रस्वकः कृष्णनयनस् ताम्रो वर्णेन शौनक ॥
स तं गृह्य नृपश्रेष्ठः सचिवान् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥
अस्तम् अभ्येति सविता विषाद् अद्य न मे भयम् ॥
सत्यवाग् अस्तु स मुनिः कृमिको मां दशत्व् अयम् ॥
तक्षको नाम भूत्वा वै तथा परिहृतं भवेत् ॥
ते चैनम् अन्ववर्तन्त मन्त्रिणः कालचोदिताः ॥
एवम् उक्त्वा स राजेन्द्रो ग्रीवायां संनिवेश्य ह ॥
कृमिकं प्राहसत् तूर्णं मुमूर्षुर् नष्टचेतनः ॥
हसन्न् एव च भोगेन तक्षकेणाभिवेष्टितः ॥
तस्मात् फलाद् विनिष्क्रम्य यत् तद् राज्ञे निवेदितम् ॥

labdhvā vittaṃ munivaras takṣakād yāvad īpsitam ||
nivṛtte kāśyape tasmin samayena mahātmani ||
jagāma takṣakas tūrṇaṃ nagaraṃ nāgasāhvayam ||
atha śuśrāva gacchan sa takṣako jagatīpatim ||
mantrāgadair viṣaharai rakṣyamāṇaṃ prayatnataḥ ||
sa cintayām āsa tadā māyāyogena pārthivaḥ ||
mayā vañcayitavyo 'sau ka upāyo bhaved iti ||
tatas tāpasarūpeṇa prāhiṇot sa bhujaṃgamān ||
phalapatrodakaṃ gṛhya rājñe nāgo 'tha takṣakaḥ ||

gacchadhvaṃ yūyam avyagrā rājānaṃ kāryavattayā ||
phalapatrodakaṃ nāma pratigrāhayituṃ nṛpam ||
sūta uvāca
te takṣakasamādiṣṭās tathā cakrur bhujaṃgamāḥ ||
upaninyus tathā rājñe darbhān āpaḥ phalāni ca ||
tac ca sarvaṃ sa rājendraḥ pratijagrāha vīryavān ||
kṛtvā ca teṣāṃ kāryāṇi gamyatām ity uvāca tān ||
gateṣu teṣu nāgeṣu tāpasacchadmarūpiṣu ||
amātyān suhṛdaś caiva provāca sa narādhipaḥ ||
bhakṣayantu bhavanto vai svādūnīmāni sarvaśaḥ ||
tāpasair upanītāni phalāni sahitā mayā ||
tato rājā sasacivaḥ phalāny ādātum aicchata ||
yad gṛhītaṃ phalaṃ rājñā tatra kṛmir abhūd aṇuḥ ||
hrasvakaḥ kṛṣṇanayanas tāmro varṇena śaunaka ||
sa taṃ gṛhya nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ sacivān idam abravīt ||
astam abhyeti savitā viṣād adya na me bhayam ||
satyavāg astu sa muniḥ kṛmiko māṃ daśatv ayam ||

क उपायः भवेत् माया-योगेन वञ्चयितव्यःka upāyaḥ bhavet māyā-yogena vañcayitavyaḥ[he thought:] what means could be found to deceive him through cunning

तापस-रूपेण भुजंगान् फल-पत्र-उदकं गृह्य प्राहिणोत्tāpasa-rūpeṇa bhujaṃgān phala-patra-udakaṃ gṛhya prāhiṇotin the guise of ascetics, he sent serpents bearing fruit, leaves, and water

भुजंगमाः राज्ञे दर्भान् आपः फलानि उपनिन्युःbhujaṃgamāḥ rājñe darbhān āpaḥ phalāni upaninyuḥthe serpents offered the king darbha grass, water, and fruit

राजा तत् प्रतिजग्राह गम्यताम् इति उवाचrājā tat pratijagrāha gamyatām iti uvācathe king accepted [it] and said: “go”

नागेषु गतेषु अमात्यान् प्रोवाच भक्षयन्तु इमानि फलानिnāgeṣu gateṣu amātyān provāca bhakṣayantu imāni phalāniwhen the nagas had departed, [the king] said to his counselors: taste these fruits

यत् फलं राज्ञा गृहीतं तत्र कृमिः अणुः अभूत्yat phalaṃ rājñā gṛhītaṃ tatra kṛmiḥ aṇuḥ abhūtin the fruit that the king picked up, there was a tiny worm

ह्रस्वकः कृष्ण-नयनः ताम्रः वर्णेनhrasvakaḥ kṛṣṇa-nayanaḥ tāmraḥ varṇenasmall, black-eyed, copper-colored

अस्तम् अभ्येति सविता विषात् अद्य न मे भयम्astam abhyeti savitā viṣāt adya na me bhayamthe sun is setting; I have no fear of poison today

सत्य-वाक् अस्तु सः मुनिः कृमिकः मां दशतु तक्षकः भूत्वाsatya-vāk astu saḥ muniḥ kṛmikaḥ māṃ daśatu takṣakaḥ bhūtvālet the sage's word come true; let this worm, becoming Takshaka, bite me

ग्रीवायां संनिवेश्य प्राहसत् मुमूर्षुः नष्ट-चेतनःgrīvāyāṃ saṃniveśya prāhasat mumūrṣuḥ naṣṭa-cetanaḥ[the king], placing [the worm] on his neck, laughed; [already] doomed, bereft of reason

Suta said: “When the great Kashyapa had turned back, having accepted [wealth] under the bargain, Takshaka swiftly set out for the City named after the Elephant (Hastinapura). Going there, Takshaka heard that the lord of the earth was carefully guarded by mantras and antidotes that destroy poison. And the king [of serpents] then thought: ‘What means [can be found] by which I might deceive him through the power of illusion (maya)?’ Then, in the guise of ascetics, the naga Takshaka sent serpents, bearing fruit, leaves, and water, to the king. Takshaka said: ‘Go calmly to the king, on the pretext of business, to offer the sovereign fruit, leaves, and water.’ Suta said: ‘Thus commanded by Takshaka, the serpents did so: they brought the king kusha grass, water, and fruit. And that mighty lord of kings accepted all of it, and, dismissing them to their affairs, said: “Go.” When the nagas, [who had come] in the guise of ascetics, had departed, the lord of men said to his counselors and friends: “Taste, all of you, these sweet fruits brought by the ascetics, together with me.” Then the king, with his counselors, wished to take the fruit; and in the fruit that the king picked up there was a tiny worm — small, black-eyed, copper-colored, O Shaunaka. Taking it up, the best of kings said to his counselors: “The sun is setting; today I have no fear of poison. Let that sage [Shringin] be true to his word: let this worm, becoming Takshaka, bite me — thus [the curse] will be averted, [its letter] fulfilled.” And the counselors, driven by fate, went along with him. Having spoken thus, that lord of kings, placing the worm on his neck, laughed — already doomed, bereft of his senses. And, still laughing, he was coiled about by Takshaka, who, emerging from that fruit, [appeared] in his own [form] — [Takshaka], of whom the king had [already] been forewarned.”

The death of Parikshit shows the inevitability of karma and the futility of every scheme devised against the higher will. All defenses — the palace, the mantras, the antidotes, the guards — prove powerless: Takshaka gets through by cunning, in the guise of ascetics, by means of a simple fruit. Scripture thus teaches that no worldly means can shield a man from a death ordained from above. Striking is the king's fatal blindness in the final moment: the sun has nearly set, the seventh day has almost passed, and the king, deceived by the nearness of safety, carelessly sets the worm on his own neck “in jest” — and perishes. Thus pride and carelessness, in the last hour, destroy one who had almost been saved; “driven by fate” (kala-choditah), both the king and his counselors lose their power of judgment. Here it is revealed that time (kala) is the instrument of the Lord, and at the appointed hour it takes from the doomed man the very capacity for sound judgment. The deepest lesson is this: safety lies not in walls and remedies but in turning to the Lord; and the death of the righteous king, [received] as the fruit of his own sin against a holy man, is the fulfillment of the highest justice. This death will itself become the cause of Janamejaya's snake sacrifice — thus one link of karma gives birth to the next.
