Here the Pandavas, having escaped, pass through a series of exploits and gains — victory over rakshasas, marriage to Draupadi, the granting of a domain. Telling is the slaying of the rakshasas Hidimba and Baka: the heroes not only save themselves but protect others — ridding the region of man-eaters, saving a brahmin; thus the strength of the Pandavas serves the protection of the weak, unlike the strength of the Kauravas, which serves oppression. In this is the mark of righteous power: it is turned toward protection, not toward oppression. Note too the ambiguity of the "gift" of Khandavaprastha: Dhritarashtra and Bhishma, feigning concern for peace ("may there be no strife"), set the Pandavas apart, giving them not the ancestral capital but a barren land; thus under the guise of peacemaking an unjust division is concealed. And yet the Pandavas, "laying aside their anger," submit — manifesting patience (kshama), which is itself their strength; they prefer peace to their own right, for as long as it is possible.
