译文

Vaishampayana said: "[When] Dushyanta, [having given his] promise, departed, the fair-thighed Shakuntala gave birth to a boy of immeasurable might, O Janamejaya — [when] three years had passed, [he was] radiant as a blazing fire, endowed with beauty, nobility, and virtues, the son of Dushyanta. Kanva, best of those who do righteous deeds, performed for the growing, wise [boy] the rites beginning with the birth-rite. With a lion's build, youthful, with white, pointed teeth, with a palm marked with the sign of the wheel, large-headed, mighty, radiant as though conceived by a god, the boy grew there swiftly. Being just six years old, that child, near Kanva's hermitage, catching tigers, lions, boars, elephants, and buffaloes — strong, binding them to the trees around the hermitage, he would climb upon them, tame them, and, playing, run about. Then the dwellers of Kanva's hermitage gave him a name: 'Let him be Sarvadamana (the All-Tamer), for he tames all.' That boy, named Sarvadamana, endowed with valor, might, and strength, became thus. The sage, having seen that boy and his superhuman deeds, said to Shakuntala: 'The time has come for his installation as heir.' Kanva, having learned of his strength, said to his disciples: 'This Shakuntala with her son, the maiden honored by all auspicious marks, deliver this very day, swiftly, from the hermitage to her husband. A long stay of wives among kin is not deemed good, for it destroys their fame, conduct, and dharma; therefore take her without delay.'"
