Here begins the genealogy of the lunar dynasty -- from Daksha through Manu. The narrative traces the line of the Bharatas back to Manu himself, the progenitor of humankind (the Manavas); earthly kings are thus rooted in sacred antiquity. This is a reminder of the single origin of all people: everyone is a "Manava," a descendant of one Manu -- the idea of the brotherhood of humankind is built into the genealogy itself. Notable too is Narada's teaching of the thousand sons of Daksha in "the knowledge of Sankhya and liberation": the tradition remembers that some chose not the continuation of the line but the path of wisdom and moksha; it was for this that Daksha turned to his daughters as heiresses. Worth marking as well is the telling phrase "brahminhood joined with kshatra" -- in this ancient line the spiritual power of the brahmin and the royal power of the kshatriya were united; the ideal of society lies in the union of wisdom and authority, where brahmins guard the Veda and kshatriyas guard order. Thus scripture, tracing the genealogy to its source, lays the foundation for understanding the greatness -- and the coming fall -- of the line of the Bharatas.
