译文

Yayati said: 'For a discerning man, a brahmin is harder to withstand than an enraged, venom-fanged serpent blazing like fire on every side.' Devayani said: 'O bull among men, how can you say that a brahmin is harder to withstand than a venomous serpent and an all-consuming fire?' Yayati said: 'A venomous serpent kills one man, and by a weapon one man is slain; but an angered brahmin destroys whole kingdoms and cities. For this reason, O timid one, a brahmin seems to me harder to withstand; and so I will not marry you unless your father has given you.' Devayani said: 'O king, take me — I am given by my father, for you have been chosen by me; there is no danger for one who does not ask, and who accepts a maiden already given.' Vaishampayana said: 'Hearing that Devayani had swiftly sent for her own father, Bhargava — that is, Shukra — himself came before the king. And King Yayati, seeing Shukra arrive, stood with joined palms, bowed low, and paid homage to the brahmin Kavya. Devayani said: "Father, this king, son of Nahusha, took my hand when I was in distress; homage to you — give me to him, for I choose no other husband in this world." Shukra said: "O hero, son of Nahusha, you have been chosen as husband by this beloved daughter of mine; accept her, given by me, as your queen." Yayati said: "O brahmin, may no great sin born of the mixing of castes touch me in this; of this I beg you." Shukra said: "I free you from that sin; choose as you wish, and do not hesitate over this marriage — I take the fault upon myself. Take the slender-waisted Devayani as your wife according to dharma. And this maiden too, Sharmishtha, daughter of Vrishaparvan, shall always be honored by you, O king — but do not summon her to your bed." Vaishampayana said: 'Thus instructed, Yayati circled Shukra keeping him to his right, and, dismissed by the great-souled sage, went rejoicing to his own city.'
