Here the marriage is concluded, with Shukra's blessing and a condition attached. Yayati's teaching on the fearsomeness of a brahmin stands out: 'an angered brahmin destroys whole kingdoms' — not superstitious dread but reverence for spiritual power, since the wrath of a man made mighty by austerity is more terrible than any weapon; hence the king fears to take a brahmin's daughter without her father's consent. This is a lesson in the sanctity of the brahmin and in caution in matters of dharma. Equally notable is that Shukra himself gives his daughter and 'removes the sin' of an unequal marriage: by the power of his own austerity the sage sanctifies a union that would otherwise be adharma. Dharma is thus not mechanical — what is forbidden by the general rule can be permitted by the will of a righteous man under particular circumstances. But most striking of all is Shukra's charge: 'honor Sharmishtha, but do not summon her to your bed.' This shows both a concern for dharma — a maidservant must not become a rival to her mistress — and, providentially, sets up what is to come: this very prohibition will be broken, and from its breaking Puru will be born, forefather of the Bharatas. Already in this blessing the verse plants the seed of the coming drama: what is commanded will be transgressed, and providence will turn that transgression into the birth of a great lineage.
