कुन्त्य् उवाच
युधिष्ठिर न संतापः कार्यः प्रति वृकोदरम् ॥
न चायं बुद्धिदौर्बल्याद् व्यवसायः कृतो मया ॥
इह विप्रस्य भवने वयं पुत्र सुखोषिताः ॥
तस्य प्रतिक्रिया तात मयेयं प्रसमीक्षिता ॥
एतावान् एव पुरुषः कृतं यस्मिन् न नश्यति ॥
दृष्ट्वा भीष्मस्य विक्रान्तं तदा जतुगृहे महत् ॥
हिडिम्बस्य वधाच् चैव विश्वासो मे वृकोदरे ॥
kunty uvāca
yudhiṣṭhira na saṃtāpaḥ kāryaḥ prati vṛkodaram ||
na cāyaṃ buddhidaurbalyād vyavasāyaḥ kṛto mayā ||
iha viprasya bhavane vayaṃ putra sukhoṣitāḥ ||
tasya pratikriyā tāta mayeyaṃ prasamīkṣitā ||
etāvān eva puruṣaḥ kṛtaṃ yasmin na naśyati ||
dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmasya vikrāntaṃ tadā jatugṛhe mahat ||
hiḍimbasya vadhāc caiva viśvāso me vṛkodare ||
Kunti said: "Yudhishthira, you must not grieve over Vrikodara; nor was this decision made by me from weakness of understanding. Here, in the house of the vipra, we, my son, have lived happily, and this repayment to him has been considered by me: such is a man in whom a good deed done is not lost. Having seen then Bhima's great courage in the house of lac and at the slaying of Hidimba, I came to trust in Vrikodara."

Here Kunti dispels the suspicion of recklessness, disclosing the grounds of her decision. It is notable that her choice rests on two supports — gratitude and experience: the duty to repay hospitality and Bhima's might witnessed with her own eyes. True trust is not blind: it rests on deeds already manifested. Notable too is the recurring saying about a good deed that "is not lost" in one who is grateful: for Kunti, gratitude is not an impulse but a considered duty. Thus the scripture shows that her decision is born not of a clouding by grief but of a sober memory of her son's valor and of the hospitality received; and faith grounded in experience is firm.
