Vaishampayana said: "When the night had passed, Bhima, taking food, went to where the man-eater was. Reaching the demon's forest, the mighty Pandava called him by name, taking up that food; and that rakshasa, hearing Bhima's word, greatly enraged, came to where Bhima stood."

Bhima meets the monster without a trace of fear, turning the very tribute into an instrument of challenge. It is telling that he does not beg or steal in, but openly calls the man-eater by name while eating the food set aside as his due: the boldness of the righteous is fearless and open. Here is the calm of strength that already knows its victory — only one who fears is fearsome, and Bhima does not fear at all. So the scripture shows that the deliverer comes to the tyrant not as a supplicant but as a commanding judge; and eating the tribute before the devourer's eyes is a visible sign of the end of his power.
