हीयमानं तु तद् रक्षः समीक्ष्य भरतर्षभ ॥
निष्पिष्य भूमौ पाणिभ्यां समाजघ्ने वृकोदरः ॥
ततो ऽस्य जानुना पृष्ठम् अवपीड्य बलाद् इव ॥
बाहुना परिजग्राह दक्षिणेन शिरोधराम् ॥
सव्येन च कटीदेशे गृह्य वाससि पाण्डवः ॥
तद् रक्षो द्विगुणं चक्रे नदन्तं भैरवान् रवान् ॥
hīyamānaṃ tu tad rakṣaḥ samīkṣya bharatarṣabha ||
niṣpiṣya bhūmau pāṇibhyāṃ samājaghne vṛkodaraḥ ||
tato 'sya jānunā pṛṣṭham avapīḍya balād iva ||
bāhunā parijagrāha dakṣiṇena śirodharām ||
savyena ca kaṭīdeśe gṛhya vāsasi pāṇḍavaḥ ||
tad rakṣo dviguṇaṃ cakre nadantaṃ bhairavān ravān ||
"Seeing that the rakshasa was weakening, O bull of the Bharatas, Vrikodara pressed him to the ground with his hands and began to strike him. Then, pressing his back down hard with his knee, he seized him by the neck with his right arm, and with his left, seizing him by the garment at his waist, the Pandava bent the rakshasa double, as he let out terrifying roars."

Bhima, seizing the moment of his enemy's weakness, brings the matter to its resolution. It is telling that he delivers the decisive blow only once the man-eater is spent: the wise warrior strikes at the right hour, not squandering his strength beforehand. Here is the triumph of the defender over the devourer: the hands that bound and crushed now break the tyrant himself. Telling too is that Baka's fearsome roars are now powerless — this is the cry of one perishing, not a threat. So the scripture shows the inevitability of retribution: he who bent and devoured the defenseless is himself bent double by the hand of righteousness; and the one who once inspired terror now himself utters a cry of terror.
