संभृता चैव विद्येयं तपसेह पुरा मया ॥
निवेदयिष्ये ताम् अद्य प्राणदाया महात्मने ॥
संस्तम्भितं हि तरसा जितं शरणम् आगतम् ॥
यो ऽरिं संयोजयेत् प्राणैः कल्याणं किं न सो ऽर्हति ॥
चक्षुषी नाम विद्येयं यां सोमाय ददौ मनुः ॥
ददौ स विश्वावसवे मह्यं विश्वावसुर् ददौ ॥
सेयं कापुरुषं प्राप्ता गुरुदत्ता प्रणश्यति ॥
आगमो ऽस्या मया प्रोक्तो वीर्यं प्रतिनिबोध मे ॥
saṃbhṛtā caiva vidyeyaṃ tapaseha purā mayā ||
nivedayiṣye tām adya prāṇadāyā mahātmane ||
saṃstambhitaṃ hi tarasā jitaṃ śaraṇam āgatam ||
yo 'riṃ saṃyojayet prāṇaiḥ kalyāṇaṃ kiṃ na so 'rhati ||
cakṣuṣī nāma vidyeyaṃ yāṃ somāya dadau manuḥ ||
dadau sa viśvāvasave mahyaṃ viśvāvasur dadau ||
seyaṃ kāpuruṣaṃ prāptā gurudattā praṇaśyati ||
āgamo 'syā mayā prokto vīryaṃ pratinibodha me ||
'The vidya that I gathered here long ago through austerity, I will now impart to the great-souled giver of life. For one who reunites with life an enemy who has been defeated, bound, and has come for refuge — what blessing does he not deserve? This vidya, named Chakshushi, which Manu gave to Soma, Soma gave to Vishvavasu, and Vishvavasu gave to me; given by a guru, it perishes in the hands of a coward. Its lineage I have told you; now learn from me its power.'

Here gratitude answers mercy with the gift of knowledge. It is telling that the gandharva, until now an enemy, hastens to reward the 'giver of life': the one who was spared repays his savior with the most precious thing he has. Telling, too, is the condition placed on the vidya: given to a coward, it perishes — sacred knowledge demands a worthy bearer. Here it is revealed that even the transmission of knowledge is subject to adhikara [qualification]: the vidya retains its power only in one who is worthy of it. Thus scripture shows gratitude turning enmity into a gift; and the knowledge passes to one who is worthy — to Arjuna, who spared his enemy.
