वैशंपायन उवाच
ते प्रतस्थुः पुरस्कृत्य मातरं पुरुषर्षभाः ॥
समैर् उदङ्मुखैर् मार्गैर् यथोद्दिष्टं परंतपाः ॥
ते गच्छन्तस् त्व् अहोरात्रं तीर्थं सोमश्रवायणम् ॥
आसेदुः पुरुषव्याघ्रा गङ्गायां पाण्डुनन्दनाः ॥
उल्मुकं तु समुद्यम्य तेषाम् अग्रे धनंजयः ॥
प्रकाशार्थं ययौ तत्र रक्षार्थं च महायशाः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
te pratasthuḥ puraskṛtya mātaraṃ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ||
samair udaṅmukhair mārgair yathoddiṣṭaṃ paraṃtapāḥ ||
te gacchantas tv ahorātraṃ tīrthaṃ somaśravāyaṇam ||
āseduḥ puruṣavyāghrā gaṅgāyāṃ pāṇḍunandanāḥ ||
ulmukaṃ tu samudyamya teṣām agre dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
prakāśārthaṃ yayau tatra rakṣārthaṃ ca mahāyaśāḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: "Those bulls among men set out, placing their mother in front, by even northward roads, as had been indicated. Going day and night, the tigers among men, the sons of Pandu, reached the tirtha of Somashravayana on the Ganga; and the greatly renowned Dhananjaya, raising a firebrand, walked ahead for the sake of light and for protection."

Here Arjuna walks ahead, bearing both light and protection. It is telling that he takes on this double task -- to illumine the path and to guard those walking it; the protector goes first, into darkness and danger. Here is an image of service: the strongest takes upon himself the labor and the risk for the sake of others. Thus the text shows the order proper to a righteous family on the road -- the mother in front as one to be honored, and the most valiant in front as guardian.
