Here the listener wishes to learn the origin of a famous feud. It is significant that enmity arose between two great ones who dwelt near a holy hermitage: discord is possible even among ascetics, so long as pride is not yet conquered. This shows that the tale of the saints' quarrel is instructive -- it will reveal the superiority of spiritual strength over worldly might. Thus the scripture shows that the question about the cause of the quarrel opens the way to a teaching about two kinds of strength.
