स राज्यं स्फीतम् उत्सृज्य तां च दीप्तां नृपश्रियम् ॥
भोगांश् च पृष्ठतः कृत्वा तपस्य् एव मनो दधे ॥
स गत्वा तपसा सिद्धिं लोकान् विष्टभ्य तेजसा ॥
तताप सर्वान् दीप्तौजा ब्राह्मणत्वम् अवाप च ॥
अपिबच् च सुतं सोमम् इन्द्रेण सह कौशिकः ॥
sa rājyaṃ sphītam utsṛjya tāṃ ca dīptāṃ nṛpaśriyam ||
bhogāṃś ca pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā tapasy eva mano dadhe ||
sa gatvā tapasā siddhiṃ lokān viṣṭabhya tejasā ||
tatāpa sarvān dīptaujā brāhmaṇatvam avāpa ca ||
apibac ca sutaṃ somam indreṇa saha kauśikaḥ ||
"Abandoning his flourishing kingdom and that resplendent royal glory, and setting pleasures behind him, he fixed his mind on austerity. And having attained perfection through austerity, pervading the worlds with his splendor, blazing with power, he scorched all, attained brahminhood, and, as Kaushika, drank the pressed soma together with Indra."

Here a king, renouncing his throne, rises through austerity to brahminhood itself. Telling is it that Vishvamitra does not content himself with acknowledging the superiority of austerity but sets out toward it himself, forsaking kingdom and pleasures: true insight is turned into deed. Telling too is the fruit -- he, a kshatriya, "attained brahminhood" through austerity, achieving what others deem given by birth alone: the highest dignity is won by unrelenting effort. Here is the truth that spiritual ascent is open to resolve and labor, not to birth alone. Thus scripture shows the triumph of austerity; and Vishvamitra, who began as a warrior, rises to become Indra's companion at the feast -- an example of transformation through the power of spirit.
