Here a remnant of wrath still smolders to this day, curbed but not extinguished. It is significant that the fire, sent off into the forest, still devours at the appointed times: passion once kindled does not vanish without trace but is contained within set bounds. In this is a reminder that even curbed anger leaves a trace: it is better never to give it rein at all, for it is hard to extinguish fully. Thus the scripture reveals that wise restraint limits evil, but the complete uprooting of passion is another matter; and the tale of the eternal fire warns against ever kindling the flame of vengeance in the first place.
