Here the princes sleep on the bare ground, on a bed of grass. It is telling that kings accustomed to fine beds now sleep on kusha grass and hides: adversity has taught them contentment with little. Simplicity of habit accompanies the righteous in hardship: the great do not grumble at a hard bed. So the scripture reveals the humble life of the exiles, and the heroes who have just won a bride rest, like ascetics, upon the earth.
