सुखोपविष्टं तु पुरोहितं तं; युधिष्ठिरो ब्राह्मणम् इत्य् उवाच ॥
पाञ्चालराजेन सुता निसृष्टा; स्वधर्मदृष्टेन यथानुकामम् ॥
प्रदिष्टशुल्का द्रुपदेन राज्ञा; सानेन वीरेण तथानुवृत्ता ॥
न तत्र वर्णेषु कृता विवक्षा; न जीवशिल्पे न कुले न गोत्रे ॥

pāñcālarājena sutā nisṛṣṭā; svadharmadṛṣṭena yathānukāmam ||
pradiṣṭaśulkā drupadena rājñā; sānena vīreṇa tathānuvṛttā ||
na tatra varṇeṣu kṛtā vivakṣā; na jīvaśilpe na kule na gotre ||
Yudhishthira said to the brahmin priest, comfortably seated: "The daughter was given by the king of Panchala according to his own dharma, as he wished; with the bridal fee set by king Drupada, she has been won by this hero. There was no stipulation there as to caste, craft, lineage, or gotra."

Here Yudhishthira points to the very terms of the contest. His observation is significant: the king himself set no condition of caste -- the victor had only to accomplish the feat; therefore no reproach of unequal lineage can stand. Here is fidelity to the letter of the agreement: what was set as the condition decides the matter; the prize is won by deed, not by rank. Thus the scripture shows the legal integrity of the victory; and Yudhishthira dispels Drupada's worry with Drupada's own condition.
