अप्राप्यरूपां हि नरेन्द्रकन्याम्; इमाम् अहं ब्राह्मण साधु मन्ये ॥
न तद् धनुर् मन्दबलेन शक्यं; मौर्व्या समायोजयितुं तथा हि ॥
न चाकृतास्त्रेण न हीनजेन; लक्ष्यं तथा पातयितुं हि शक्यम् ॥
तस्मान् न तापं दुहितुर् निमित्तं; पाञ्चालराजो ऽर्हति कर्तुम् अद्य ॥
न चापि तत् पातनम् अन्यथेह; कर्तुं विषह्यं भुवि मानवेन ॥
aprāpyarūpāṃ hi narendrakanyām; imām ahaṃ brāhmaṇa sādhu manye ||
na tad dhanur mandabalena śakyaṃ; maurvyā samāyojayituṃ tathā hi ||
na cākṛtāstreṇa na hīnajena; lakṣyaṃ tathā pātayituṃ hi śakyam ||
tasmān na tāpaṃ duhitur nimittaṃ; pāñcālarājo 'rhati kartum adya ||
na cāpi tat pātanam anyatheha; kartuṃ viṣahyaṃ bhuvi mānavena ||
"For this princess, unattainable by the unworthy, I deem, O brahmin, rightly won: that bow the weak of strength cannot string, and one unskilled in arms, of base birth, cannot so strike down the mark. Therefore the king of Panchala ought not now grieve on his daughter's account; and that feat of striking down the mark could not have been accomplished otherwise by any man on earth."

Here Yudhishthira, by the very argument of the feat, dispels fear of unworthiness. It is significant that he reasons thus: the bow is beyond the weak, the mark beyond the unskilled and the low-born; therefore whoever accomplished it is assuredly worthy and exalted. The deed itself testifies to its doer -- a feat of this kind lies within the power of a lofty man alone. Thus the scripture shows that victory itself vouches for the victor's worth; and Yudhishthira calms the father's heart without yet naming names.
