इदं त्व् अद्य क्षमं कर्तुम् अस्माकं पुरुषर्षभ ॥
यावन् न कृतमूलास् ते पाण्डवेया विशां पते ॥
तावत् प्रहरणीयास् ते रोचतां तव विक्रमः ॥
अस्मत्पक्षो महान् यावद् यावत् पाञ्चालको लघुः ॥
तावत् प्रहरणं तेषां क्रियतां मा विचारय ॥

"But here is what befits us to do now, O bull among men: while the Pandavas have not yet put down roots, they must be struck down — let your valor find favor; while our side is great and the Panchala side is small, so long let the blow be struck against them; do not deliberate."

Here Karna calls for open battle rather than deceit. It is telling that he prefers plain war to secret schemes: in the very choice of means he is more honest than a conspirator. Yet it must be said plainly: valor turned to an unjust cause does not cease to be adharma — open war against the innocent is no nobler than deception. Here it is revealed that without dharma, even courage is blind. Thus the scripture reveals Karna's half-virtue; and his forthrightness, alas, serves untruth.
