तथा कुरूणां सर्वेषाम् अन्येषाम् अपि भारत ॥
एवं गते विग्रहं तैर् न रोचये; संधाय वीरैर् दीयताम् अद्य भूमिः ॥
तेषाम् अपीदं प्रपितामहानां; राज्यं पितुश् चैव कुरूत्तमानाम् ॥
yathā ca mama rājñaś ca tathā duryodhanasya te ||
tathā kurūṇāṃ sarveṣām anyeṣām api bhārata ||
evaṃ gate vigrahaṃ tair na rocaye; saṃdhāya vīrair dīyatām adya bhūmiḥ ||
teṣām apīdaṃ prapitāmahānāṃ; rājyaṃ pituś caiva kurūttamānām ||
'And as they are dear to me and to the king, so they are to Duryodhana, and so too to all the Kurus, and to others as well, O Bharata; such being the case, I do not approve of enmity with them. Having made peace with the heroes, let the land be given to them now, for this too is their kingdom—the kingdom of the forefathers and of the father, the best of the Kurus.'

Here the elder calls for reconciliation and a just division. It is significant that Bhishma affirms the Pandavas' right to the inheritance of their forefathers: the kingdom is the common heritage of the family, not the spoils of one branch. Herein lies a lesson: peace and truth are worth more than strife, and inheritance ought to be divided justly. Thus the scripture shows Bhishma's love of peace; and his counsel stands against scheming plots.
