वैशंपायन उवाच
कथयित्वा तु तत् सर्वं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः स भारत ॥
प्रययौ हिमवत्पार्श्वं ततो वज्रधरात्मजः ॥
अगस्त्यवटम् आसाद्य वसिष्ठस्य च पर्वतम् ॥
भृगुतुङ्गे च कौन्तेयः कृतवाञ् शौचम् आत्मनः ॥
प्रददौ गोसहस्राणि तीर्थेष्व् आयतनेषु च ॥
निवेशांश् च द्विजातिभ्यः सो ऽददत् कुरुसत्तमः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
kathayitvā tu tat sarvaṃ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ sa bhārata ||
prayayau himavatpārśvaṃ tato vajradharātmajaḥ ||
agastyavaṭam āsādya vasiṣṭhasya ca parvatam ||
bhṛgutuṅge ca kaunteyaḥ kṛtavāñ śaucam ātmanaḥ ||
pradadau gosahasrāṇi tīrtheṣv āyataneṣu ca ||
niveśāṃś ca dvijātibhyaḥ so 'dadat kurusattamaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: "Having told all this to the brahmins, the son of the thunder-wielder went to the slope of Himavat; having reached Agastyavata and the mountain of Vasishtha, and at Bhrigutunga the son of Kunti performed his purification; he gave away thousands of cows at the tirthas and shrines, and gave dwellings to the brahmins, best of the Kurus."

Here the exile turns his wandering into a feat of purification and generosity. It is significant that Arjuna both bathes at holy places and generously endows the brahmins: pilgrimage and giving [dana] purify the soul. Stripped of his kingdom, he grows rich in virtue. Thus scripture shows Arjuna's piety in exile; and his generosity to the brahmins multiplies his merit.
