Vaishampayana said: "Certain kings, approaching that pool strewn with gems, though they saw it, did not recognize the water, and out of ignorance fell into it."

Here, in passing, a seed of what is to come is sown: an illusion of sight at this pool. It is significant that failing to discern what is seen, out of ignorance, leads to a fall -- a lesson that later, in another hall, will turn into mockery and enmity. Thus the verse shows in advance how deceptive appearance can be and how dangerous ignorance is; and next -- the fragrant groves all around.
